    Palitana, the place of temples is a town in Bhavnagar district of Indian state Gujarat. Mainly the place is well known for the Jain temples. The town is a part of the Saurashtra region. Palitana is known as the largest cluster of Jain temples in India. In total there are around 900 temples from the base to the peak of the hill Shatrunjaya. There are 3950 steps of 3.5 Km distance to reach the peak of the hill. This is one of the major pilgrimage centres for Jains. Jain community consider this place as the holiest of all the pilgrimage places. Palitana is worlds the only mountain that houses more than 900 temples.

    History of the Palitana

    The Jains have five hill locations for their holiest clusters of temples, Palitana is considered as the most important among the all. Most of the temples are built of marbles. The temples of Palitana are constructed in two phases. The first phase was constructed during 11th and 12th century where as the second phase was constructed during 16th century. Adinath, Vimal Shah, Asthapada, Sahasrakuta, Kumarpal are some of the major temples of the hill. Due to the effort of the wealthy Jain businessmen the temples were constructed. During British rule Palitana was a princely state. Every jain devotee aspires to climb to the top of the mountain at least once in lifetime.

    The climate of Palitana is pleasant. October to February is the best time to visit Palitana. The town is well connected in all modes of transport. So easily the devotees can reach the place. Chha Gua Teerth Yatra is one of the special days that held on full moon day of the month Kartika. Thousands of people gather here on this day. Mahavir Jayanti is another festival celebrated at the temple. At the temple city no one is allowed to stay overnight.

    Best time to visit Palitana

    The climate of Palitana is generally pleasant. The summer season continues from March to June, with daytime temperature reaching 40°C.The monsoon reaches Palitana in July and remains there till September. Winter sets in around October and continues till February. The summer temperatures range from 24°C to 42°C and winter temperatures range from 10°C to 24°C.

    How to reach Palitana

    By Air: The nearest airport is in Bhavnaga but the most convenient airport is Ahmedabad which is well connected through regular flights to many important cities like Mumbai and Delhi.

    By Train: Palitana is on a rail branch line, with trains available to Bhavnagar, Ahmedabad.

    By Road: Gujarat State Transport buses between Bhavanagar and Palitana as well as from several others cities.
