    Periyar is located at God’s own country, Kerala. It is a famous National park and wildlife Sanctuary. Periyar is located at the feet of Cardamom Hills and Pandalam Hills. This area is considered as the most protected area for elephants and tigers. The park is name after the Periyar river. Thousand of tourists visit this park every year. Wildlife safari, rafting is another activity available here. The park is landed over an area of 357 square miles.

    Earlier in 12th century the Mullaperiyar dam was constructed by the Pandayas over the river Periyar and this created an arificial lake here. This lake enhances the beauty of this place. In the year 1899, the park was declared as a forest reserve. Only notification has come that this is a national park, but the legal status is still pending.

    Have a look into the wildlife in Periyar

    Apart from elephants and tigers, wild pigs, sambar, gaur, mouse, barking deer, lion tailed macaque, nilgiri langur, common langur are also found here. Currently the population of elephant is 800 in the park. The population of tiger is also increasing here. The park is home of different flora and fauna. 171 or more types of grasses are found here.  Bamboo, sandal wood, tamarind, terminalias are some of the trees found here. There are 35 types of major animals here. Around 270 species of birds are found here.

    Periyar Lake, Kumily, Mangla Devi temple, Pullumedu are the nearby attractions to Periyar. One can take the jeep safari here to explore more the park. There are different timings of safari. One should know the safari timings. December to March is the perfect time to visit Periyar. During this time the temperature will be mild and no rainfall, so it is easy to roam around the park. During this time, one can see the migratory birds here. To reach at Periyar private cabs can be hired from the major cities of Kerala.

    You can visit Periyar in any season. The best time to visit Periyar is September to April.

    How to reach Periyar

    By Air: The nearest airports are Cochin (200 km) and Madurai (140 km).

    By Train: The nearest railhead is Kottayam (114km)

    By Road: Thekkadi is connected by bus service from Thiruvananthapuram (271 km), Cochin (200 km), Kottayam (114 km), and Madurai, Tamil Nadu (140 km). Forest Department operates bus services between Kumily and Thekkadi.
